Artwork › THE EXECUTIONER

THE EXECUTIONER

£0.00

Oil on Linen

Throughout my life health challenges have been a constant battle. I have developed strategies to manage the pain and prevent it from ruling my life. One of the most powerful, yet most difficult, is the skill of detachment: the ability to detach from the pain that threatens to stop me.

This work explores the intense mental discipline required to control the dark side of my existence. The fractured, multi- perspective composition reflects the confusion and struggle of the process.

The severed head of the Executioner rests upon a wooden block. This depicts my ability to execute the suffering, severing the pain from its ability to control me. The painting itself is shown to be slipping away from the canvas - a visual metaphor for the deliberate separation from pain, physically, emotionally and mentally.

This piece will be on show in my solo exhibition next weekend in the Oriel Gallery, Clotworthy House, Antrim Castle Gardens.

It won the Mary Dugdale Cup for Portraiture and The People's Choice Award in the Ulster Society of Women Artists Annual Exhibition in August.
