THE MESSENGER
Award Winner
Oil on Linen
I have something to say but the words are too painful.
A messenger has a story to tell but he needs people to be ready to listen. Sometimes stories are too hard to relay or hear, they are often written to avoid the sound of painful words. In my case, I tell my story through painting and drawing to inform the viewer about my reality. To convey the impact of pain through image alone, the words locked away, possibly never to be discovered, as you can see from the message in his eyes.
I am often asked who the people are in the portraits. They are people who I fleetingly meet and who have caught my attention. The Messenger was a carpet fitter but not only did his image fascinate me, he also intrigued me because he didn't say a word.
This messenger portrays an esoteric wisdom which requires him to hold on to a difficult message so not to inflict distress on others. He has the compassion to know when to be silent and to apply this discretion for the greater good. The message will only be revealed under extreme compulsion as you can see from the determination in his features and the haunted wisdom in his hypnotic gaze.
He carries the burden of the message alone and is weighted down in the corner of the canvas by this responsibility.
