Managing the most basic function like breathing, with pain always over your shoulder, ready to inflict whatever it chooses with no warning, feels like a daily battle. The only way to stay in control of this demon is to stay calm, collected, focused, relaxed and at peace. The opposite to what would normally come naturally when under such threat.
A lifetime of controlling a debilitating spinal condition has enabled me to control the demon who lurks in the shadows. I don't want it to be seen but sometimes it is unavoidable. My husband has often advised me to ‘lose the odd battle as I continue to win the war’, and this phrase inspired me to produce this piece.
The demon can appear and fade in different lights because of the way I painted it using only my hand. What I have to remember is as long as it stays in the shadows I am winning the war.
